Driving with Maggie

In the summer of 2019, we got a phone call from our good friend, Brandon. He was living in Hawaii at the time and had decided to purchase a vehicle that would fondly come to be known as Maggie May.

A 1984 Volkswagon Wolfsburg Vanagon Westfalia camper van.

The only thing…it was located in Vermont…and he wanted to bring it back to Hawaii. Of course we wanted to join this journey and document it! Brandon flew out to Vermont to pick up Maggie, traveled with her in the northeast a bit, then headed south to grab us in Jersey and keep going.

Below is the summer series, Driving with Maggie, in order of the leg of the trip we were able to commit to.
1 week.
Monday through Sunday.
New Jersey to Louisiana.

Never not adventuring. #exploremore

Tuesday Driving with Maggie
Roanoke -- Cascade Falls, VA

Palin' around with some new friends and exploring good parts of VA by hiking and swimming.

Wednesday Driving with Maggie
Roanoke -- Cosby TN

Sometimes your camper van from 1984 leaks. And sometimes you have to go to Home Depot to fix it. Also, when you're in Cosby, TN look up Chuck and Larry, they're pretty awesome guys. Nothing like the movie. And can show you some awesome campsites. Also, they have dogs.

Thursday Driving with Maggie
Cosby -- Knoxville, TN

Mostly by tow. The van broke down just after we passed Dollywood...

Friday Driving with Maggie
Knoxville, TN -- Jackson, MS

After our main man Dean helped us get fixed up, we were back out. A drive day, for the most part. It rained a lot Friday, monsoon type weather. Originally headed to New Orleans this day, we ended up spending the night in Jackson after a local we met at a gas station advised us not to go the route we were planning, especially at night.

Saturday Driving with Maggie
Jackson, MS -- New Orleans, LA

We slept overnight in a Walmart parking lot. Then headed south to Fontainbleau State Park.
Explored.
Showered.
And made our way for NOLA, one of my favorite places. Driving over the causeway, we prayed for no more rain, to avoid leaks in the van, and so we could explore some more.

Here's to hoping we all get to explore again soon.

Sunday Driving with Maggie
Fontainbleau, LA -- MSY -- EWR

J.A. Cinema’s last day on the road for this trip.

We camped out in Fontainbleau State Park and woke up to drive into NOLA again to catch a flight back to NJ.

Did a pretty early airport drop-off because Brandon was continuing his travels west to eventually ship the van to Hawaii!

After many delayed flights, finally made it back in time to watch the beautiful sunrise.

All in all, a super solid road trip, with super solid people and friends. Thanks for inviting us along, Brandon.

Hope you've enjoyed this summer series!
